Enrique Pacheco Timelapse Master

Si existe una disciplina fotográfica única es el TIMELAPSE. El conjugar el movimiento con la fotografía que en esencia congela el tiempo es un contrasentido que sin embargo recrea la realidad de un modo que con la conciencia del tiempo del ser humano es imposible disfrutar a simple vista. El jugar con el tiempo por medio de fotos es un arte que en los últimos tiempos esta experimentando un gran desarrollo.

Dentro de este campo, como en todos, existen unos autores que podríamos calificar de Maestros y el protagonista de hoy es uno de ellos a nivel mundial. Enrique Pacheco fue uno de los precursores en el desarrollo de esta técnica y ha conseguido con la calidad de sus trabajos que sus videos formen parte de importantes documentales, sean utilizados en campañas publicitarias o sea emitidos como imágenes idóneas para dar a conocer las virtudes de los modelos de una de las multinacionales más grandes del mundo, SONY.

Sin más rodeos la entrevista a Enrique Pacheco

Eres actualmente uno de los mejores especialistas en la técnica de TIMELAPSE. Aunque actualmente esta disciplina esta de moda, tú fuiste uno de los pioneros en la misma. ¿Cómo te interesaste por esta técnica?

Todo empezó en 2010 cuando estaba viviendo en Islandia. Aquel invierno entró en erupción el volcán Eyjafjallajokull, la ceniza que paralizó el tráfico aéreo brotaba del cráter lentamente, tan lentamente que apenas se apreciaba. Por aquel entonces el timelapse no era tan conocido como ahora, a penas había información en internet, así que fue casi un experimento para poder captar el movimiento de esa ceniza. El resultado fue tan espectacular que desde entonces no he parado de evolucionar en este campo.

¿Cómo fueron aquellos momentos? ¿Eras consciente de la repercusión e importancia de las imágenes que estabas tomando?

La experiencia de estar junto a un volcán en erupción es totalmente indescriptible. Sabía que estaba viviendo la experiencia mas fascinante de mi vida. De lo que no era consciente es de que también fuera a cambiar tanto mi carrera. Desde entonces mi vinculo con Islandia y su medio natural es muy intimo, he vivido en la isla durante mas de 2 años y la he visitado en mas de 15 ocasiones.

Actualmente realizas numerosos viajes por los diferentes encargos y proyectos propios. ¿Cómo llevas el pasar tanto tiempo fuera de casa? ¿Cuáles son tus próximos viajes?

Sin duda viajar es una de las satisfacciones mas grandes que el ser humano puede experimentar. Pero no nos engañemos, yo no viajo de turismo, mi profesión es muy dura, viajo con mucho equipo, a zonas remotas, con frio o calor extremo durante interminables jornadas, a veces sin mucha comida a mano, y siempre con la presión de conseguir lo que necesitas. Por no hablar de la eterna lucha contra la meteorología. Dicho esto, también he de decir que no lo cambiaría por nada, aunque volver a mi casa en Madrid cada dos semanas es también una gran sensación de placer.

Mi próximo viaje es a Hog Kong, de hecho escribo estas líneas desde el avión via Dubai. Después en Octubre voy a Marruecos y en Noviembre a Islandia, en ambas ocasiones para impartir talleres de timelapse y video.

El interés por los TIMELAPSE es muy grande actualmente, ¿hacia dónde crees que evoluciona esta disciplina? ¿Cuál crees que es la razón de que tu trabajo siga siendo referente en este campo a nivel mundial?

Creo que la clave está en la posibilidad de crear imágenes que sorprenden al espectador. Cada vez hay mas aficionados y profesionales que experimentan con una gran libertad y sin las presiones y limitaciones del mercado. Esto hace que esta técnica esté en constante evolución y produciendo imágenes de alta calidad e interés.

Por mi parte, creo que la clave de mi éxito es el sumo cuidado que pongo en cada detalle de la producción de mi trabajo, siempre buscando los mas altos niveles de calidad, y sobre todo siempre fiel a mi estilo. Recuerdo un amigo que decía… “Si tienes un restaurante italiano, un día puedes ofrecer pasta y otro pizza, pero no arroz tres delicias”

Continuando con lo “internacional”. Tu mayor mercado es el internacional, ¿crees que esto se debe a la situación de crisis en España o también influye la propia conciencia hacia todo lo relacionado con la fotografía que existe en nuestro país?

Vivimos en un mundo totalmente globalizado, los plátanos que comemos vienen de Sud América, la ropa que vestimos de Tailandia y casi todo lo demás de China. No tiene ningún sentido que como fotógrafos queramos seguir viviendo del mercado local. El profesional que no tenga esto claro no tiene futuro. Yo me di cuenta hace ya varios años y desde entonces a penas trabajo para nadie en España. Mis videos se venden en todo el mundo a través de Getty Images y se ven en todas las televisiones Sony Bravia en cualquier rincón del planeta.

¿Qué podemos esperar del trabajo de Enrique Pacheco en el futuro próximo? ¿Algún proyecto “confesable”?

Creo que mi trabajo seguirá la línea actual durante algunos años mas, todavía tengo que viajar a muchos países y realizar muchos videos antes de que plantee cambiar de dirección. Tras Hong Kong, Marruecos e Islandia seguramente venga algún otro país árabe, Jordania o Turquía y por supuesto de nuevo a USA, hay muchos parques nacionales que descubrir en el basto país americano.

¿Podrías dar algún consejo  a las personas que empiecen a interesarse por la fotografía en general y por los TIMELAPSES en particular?

Perseverancia, es mi mejor consejo. No he llegado donde estoy gracias a nadie, por el camino nunca nadie me ayudó, lo que he conseguido es a base de tesón, o como diría mi madre, cabezonería.

Without further ado the interview with Enrique Pacheco

You currently one of the best specialists in the art of TIMELAPSE. Although this discipline is currently fashionable, you were one of the pioneers in the same. How did you become interested in this technique?

It all started in 2010 when I was living in Iceland. That winter began erupting Eyjafjallajokull volcano, the ash that paralyzed air traffic crater flowed slowly, so slowly that hardly appreciated. By then the timelapse was not as well known as now, barely had information on the internet, so it was almost an experiment to capture the movement of the ash. The result was so spectacular that since then I have not stopped evolving in this field.

How were those times? Were you aware of the impact and importance of the pictures you were taking?

The experience of being next to an erupting volcano is totally indescribable. I knew I was living the most fascinating experience of my life. What I was not aware of is that also would change both my career. Since then my link with Iceland and its natural environment is very intimate, I lived on the island for over two years and have visited on more than 15 occasions.

Currently perform numerous trips by different commissions and own projects. How have you been spending so much time away from home? What are your next trip?

Travel is certainly one of the greatest satisfactions that the human being can experience. But make no mistake, I do not travel tourism, my profession is very hard, I travel with a lot of equipment, to remote areas with extreme heat or cold for long days, sometimes without much food on hand, and always with the pressure to get what you need. Not to mention the eternal struggle against the weather. That said, I must also say that I would not change anything, but back to my house in Madrid every two weeks is also a great sense of pleasure.

My next trip is to Hog Kong, actually writing this from the plane via Dubai. After going to Morocco in October and November to Iceland, both times to teach workshops and video timelapse.

The interest is very large TIMELAPSE now, where do you think this discipline evolves? What do you think is the reason that your work remains leader in this field worldwide?

I think the key is the ability to create images that surprise the viewer. More and more experienced amateurs and professionals with a great freedom and without the pressures and constraints of the market. This makes this technique is constantly evolving and producing images of high quality and interest.

For my part, I think the key to my success is the great care I put into every detail of the production of my work, always seeking the highest levels of quality, and above all always true to my style. I remember a friend saying ... "If you have an Italian restaurant, a day can provide other pasta and pizza but not fried rice"

Continuing with the "international". Your biggest international market is, do you think this is due to the crisis in Spain and also influences one's consciousness into everything related to photography that exists in our country?

We live in a fully globalized world, bananas we eat comes from South America, the clothes we wear from Thailand and almost everything else in China. It makes no sense that as photographers we want to live in the local market. The professional who does not have this clear has no future. I realized several years ago and since then hardly work for anyone in Spain. My Videos are sold worldwide through Getty Images and are in all Sony Bravia TVs anywhere in the world.

What can we expect from the work of Enrique Pacheco in the near future? Any project "confesable"?

I think my work will continue the current line for a few more years, I have yet to travel to many countries and make many videos before rising to change direction. After Hong Kong, Morocco and Iceland surely come any other Arab country, Jordan and Turkey and of course back to USA, there are many national parks to discover in the vast American country.

Could you give some advice to people who become interested in photography in general and especially the timelapse?

Perseverance is my best advice. I got where I am because no one, by the way no one ever helped me, what I got is the basis of perseverance, or as my mother would say, stubbornness.
